The Robert J. Smith Jr. Fund

RobertSmithRobert J. Smith Jr., fondly remembered as the “Mayor of Osterville,” devoted his life to serving the village he loved. After his passing in 2002 at the age of 75, the Osterville Village Association established a fund in his name to support nonprofit projects that continue to strengthen the community.

Bob’s impact on Osterville was remarkable. He served as an officer of the Osterville Village Association and the Osterville Business and Professional Association, a member of the Rotary Club, director of the Osterville Free Library, and chair of the Cape Cod Academy Board for 17 years. He also lent his leadership to the Osterville Elementary School Council and the Jane Eshbaugh Community Service Award Committee.

A World War II Navy veteran, Bob honored fellow servicemen through his work with the Barnstable Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Association. He produced the annual Memorial Day event at Armstrong-Kelley Park, partnering with the Osterville Bay Elementary School. His service extended far beyond the village as well, with board roles at the Cape Cod Conservatory, the New School of Cape Cod, and the Salvation Army. He was also a dedicated member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Hyannis.

Education and community were at the heart of Bob’s work. He founded the national Independent Educational Counselors Association and served as an officer of the Independent School Chairmen’s Association, ensuring students had access to opportunity and guidance.

Today, the Robert J. Smith Jr. Fund continues his legacy of generosity. Regular recipients include the the Osterville Historical Society, and the Armstrong-Kelley Park.

Bob’s spirit of service lives on in every project supported by the fund, keeping his dedication to Osterville alive for future generations.
